10 Outdoor Planters We Love This Season
Patio Season is Officially Here!
Even if summers in Pittsburgh can be a little bit dicey, we can take solace in knowing that warmer temps and sunnier skies are right around the corner. That means it’s time for the great indoors to finally spill back out into the great outdoors as we reclaim our dormant yard space from Mother Nature!
Throughout the last year, we’ve gained an even greater appreciation for our outdoor space as a pandemic-safe alternative for spending time with friends and family. So to help you polish up your patio and get ready for hosting once more, we’ve rounded up 10 of our favorite outdoor planters to get you inspired this season.
Let’s dive in:
1. Cement Basket Planter Set
We’d like to preface this one by saying we typically aren’t huge fans of imposter materials posing as something else (eg: ceramic plank tile that resembles wood), BUT these planters are a great way to achieve a more natural or rustic look on your patio without sacrificing durability. Sold as a set (small, medium + large), these cement planters can stand up to the rain and dirt, meaning you won’t be stuck throwing away a moldy natural fiber basket later this fall. They also come with a perfectly imperfect “slouch” built-in giving their cement profile enough realism to fool even the most discerning eye!
2. Ceramic Wallscape Planters
If you’re short on patio space or simply looking to dress up the backside of a fence or balcony partition, these ceramic wallscape planters are a versatile option. Safe for outdoors, even in cold winter temps, these planters are also great for adding dimension and texture to your indoor spaces without taking up any floor space! They come in 4” or 6” sizes which make clustering a breeze, and in eye-catching matte black or white glazed finishes (mounting hardware included).
3. Ceramic Sevilla Outdoor Planter
These are a sleek contemporary take on the classic mid-century acacia stand planter that can easily move indoors at the end of the season and incorporate well with any décor style. Word of warning: these planters include a drainage hole which your plants will love, but your floors may not — so have a game plan if you decide to go that route come fall (a simple drip tray like this should do the trick)! Sold in three colorways and two sizes.
4. Dipped Clay Pot + Stand
Or, if you’d rather forgo finding a drip tray altogether you can always opt for this no-fuss version which includes one stylishly integrated into its metal stand! This one unfortunately only comes in one size suitable for smaller plants (12” x 8”), but we think the dip-glazed terracotta and stunning tapered shape make enough of a statement to stand alone in your private backyard oasis.
5. Modern Classic Vertical Tiered Planter
If you’re looking to add some vertical interest to your patio, try a tiered planter like this brass and iron version from Kathy Kuo Home. At 51” tall, a few of these lined up in a row filled with a cascading plant such as Fuchsia or Snapdragon, paired with something textured like Donkey’s Tail, would also serve as an excellent partition to add intimacy to your conversation or dining space.
6. Resin Composite Vessel Planters
To add some larger-scale plants to your space without the back-breaking weight, opt for something like these resin composite planters which are super durable and can stand up to year-round abuse. With a lovely antique vessel shape and airbrushed textured finish, these are flexible enough to complement a variety of design styles from more traditional or rustic, to a boho or vintage vibe! This particular version comes in a variety of shapes and sizes, including a 28.5” “tall” version which would even make an excellent indoor floor vase for displaying some Pampas grass.
7. French Clamshell Planter
Inspired by 18th-century French shell motifs, these hand-cast resin planters add a fun, natural flair to your outdoor space! Their low profile makes them suitable for something with a shallow root structure like succulents, or even fragrant herbs like lavender and chamomile. These also come in a variety of sizes ranging from small at 15¾" wide, perfect for adorning your tabletop, to an extra-large at 29½" wide, which is perfect for recreating The Birth of Venus. Try a few of these lining the steps down to your yard for an elegant look!
8. Rounded Paulownia Wood Set
Nicknamed “The Aluminum of Timber,” Paulownia wood has the highest strength to weight ratio of any wood in the world. It’s also the fastest-growing tree in the world, which not only makes it a sustainable choice, but results in beautifully wide and virtually knot-free grain patterns. These rounded planters are sold as a large and small set (with the third, slightly more intricate medium option here ), and come in a lovely distressed natural finish full of warmth and texture.
9. Concrete Terrazzo Hanging Planter
Hanging planters are a great way to layer in some greenery at or above eye level and can help make your space feel even more lush without overcrowding your floor space. Try adding a few planters to your pergola, or even installing a wall-mounted hanging rod to achieve a fun relaxed look (more ideas on clever ways to hang plants here). This contemporary round concrete planter is available for a steal, and jumps on the timeless Terrazzo trend, helping you bring more of the inside out.
10. Glazed Ceramic Cube Planter
Last, but certainly not least — we know Pittsburgh can be rather notorious for grey sky days, so we wanted to finish off our list with these glazed ceramic vase planters to add a bold pop of color to your patio! Available in three gorgeous jewel-tone hues, these planters will whisk you away to an exotic locale whenever you step out into your own backyard. To avoid damaging the ceramic, be sure to bring these beauties inside for the winter.
