Outdoor Living: Patio Project Reveal

Today I’m excited to share with you a recently completed outdoor space I began working on in the spring. These are previous clients of mine and I was so happy they asked me to come back and help them outfit their patio. Outdoor spaces are one of my favorite areas of the home to design. I love the idea of outdoor living and how it can expand the usable space of your property. Its versatility presents a wide range of uses. Relaxing, dining, entertaining, playing, and heck even an outdoor home office - whatever you need it to be!

These particular clients are a military family so they tend to relocate every 3-5 years. Lucky them! They are currently in New England having moved from the Deep South, where their seasons were hot, hotter, or hottest. Even though their “patio season” is now shorter a great outdoor space is still a top priority for them and they cherish what warmer weather they do have.

Some of the key elements they wanted to incorporate into their space were covered dining for a minimum of 5, an entertaining area that is conducive to conversation and relaxing, and enough open space for the kids to play and burn off some of that endless energy. With three little ones six and under it was important to arrange things so that the parents could still have constant lines of sight on the kiddos.

Before

Before

As you can see there was already a great foundation set for this space to be awesome! The clients did have some pre-existing outdoor furniture when they moved in, but it was lacking a bit in scale, functionality and didn’t quite fully accommodate their now family of five!

For this project, the client had a pretty solid vision in mind of what she wanted her space to look like and asked for a neutral tone color palette. The clients owned an area rug and a swing chair that we were able to incorporate into the final design. Versatility, functionality, and flexibility were concepts that really drove our decision-making for this project.

And now for the grand debut!

Thank you Mother Nature for the lush, vibrant greenery!

Overall, I really love how it came together for them! And I’ve been told they use the space daily, which makes me so thrilled to hear! It’s the most charming, peaceful, and private setting in the evening with the cafe lights on too. (next time I’m that way for a visit I’ll snap a few photos for you all!)

Their two main priorities were the dining and seating areas. The pre-existing retractable awning lends itself to a great location for the modular sectional, offering the option of sun or shade. We placed the dining area close by to maintain the intimate feel of an outdoor living space. You can see from some of the photos there is still quite a bit of open patio space creating a great play area.

Selections

The Sectional was selected for its modular design and versatility. It can be arranged in a multitude of configurations and suit itself to just about any space, which is great for a family that moves frequently! I like that the back cushions are thicker and offer a bit more support. (the client’s exact style is no longer available, the only difference is the coffee table is replaced with a fire-pit. If the fire-pit option doesn’t work for you I’ve linked a very similar style )

The clients owned this Swing Chair prior to the project. I love how the swing element adds a bit of fun and height to the overall seating area.

The Bar Cart was a great little add-on and perfect for a family who loves to entertain! The removable beverage tub is easy to fill and empty and could allow for extra serving space. The tray and bottom drawer offer much-needed storage. The double towel racks and rolling casters are a real bonus and make mobility effortless!

The Dining Set with seating for 6 offers the perfect setting to dining al fresco! The faux wood metal table is super durable and allows for easy cleaning. The high-back wicker armchairs and their cushions provide extra comfort for dining and delightful after-dinner conversation. Another nice feature is the ability to accommodate an umbrella. (exact set no longer available but many similar positive features)

Providing shade over the table this Umbrella comes with LED lights, which is a great after-dark feature.

You might want to consider protecting your investments with a Sectional Cover, a Dining Set Cover, and a Bar Cart Cover.

Just because it’s outside we couldn’t forget those finishing touches! The accessories are where you can bring out your personality and unique style. These can be refreshed from year to year with minimal cost. Here are a few key accessories that really added the “wow” factor for my client: Area Rug, floor pouf, throw pillows, Cafe Lights, garden stool, and table place settings. In addition to the natural beauty of Mother Nature, we chose to add a second layer with potted plants and colorful flowers.

The close proximity of the Swing Set keeps that fun, family-friendly aspect!

Because of distance, and the times we’re currently living in, this project was completed almost entirely by remote work. The client and I had many phone and email conversations, sharing photos, measurements, and ideas back and forth. I created a floor plan and mood board with clickable links to all items I was suggesting. She was then able to purchase all items herself and have them delivered to her home directly. Once everything arrived and was assembled by the home owners, I safely made a visit to help them arrange it all, add my finishing touches, and take final photos. I so appreciate the clients willingness to take on a bit of the legwork and adapt during these times to get the project completed!
